Illinois officials want more people to sign up to be organ donors

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is spearheading a month-long effort to get more people signed up on the state's organ and tissue donor registry.

Illinois' Secretary of State says ordinary people can be heroes.

In conjunction with national Donate Life Month, Secretary of State Jesse White says he wants to get more people signed up to be organ donors.

The Be a Hero effort encourages Illinoisans to join the state's organ and tissue donor registry.

More than 5.5 million people in the state are already registered, but there are still 5,000 people on a waiting list. White says you don't want you or a loved one to end up on that list.

You may not have a need today, you may not have a need tomorrow, but sometime during your lifetime, you or someone you may know will have a need for an organ and we just hope that when that need arrives, that there will be an adequate supply of organs available," he says.

You can register at LifeGoesOn.com or by calling 1-800-210-2106.
