Veteran of 38 years on the force, 35 of those as the top officer of the department

The town of Martinsville, Illinois is losing its longtime police chief.

Herman Davidson is retiring next month after serving as head of the department for 35 years.

Davidson, a Martinsville native, joined the force as a 24-year-old back in 1975.

He moved up to chief three years later and has held that spot since.

His actual last day is February 28.  He is currently on vacation and plans to take it easy and do a little gardening when the weather improves.
