Highway Construction is Necessary Inconvenience

Construction on U.S. 40 has proved bumpy for business owners and motorists. As it moves east into downtown Brazil, more and more businesses are affected by it.
Necessary inconvenience... that is the theme among the business owners we spoke to along U.S. 40.
   
While the construction may make it difficult to access their businesses, it's something they say will help beautify the community.

"Well not really troublesome," said Gerald Long, owner of G. Long's Auto Exchange. "I'd say it's kind of a necessary inconvenience. It's going to be great for the town of Brazil, when it's done."

The construction makes it difficult to get in and out of some businesses.

Gerald Long, who's auto store sits right off the intersection of U.S. 40 and State Road 340, has had similar issues. But he's fortunate enough to have a back entrance to his business.

"The people that have wanted to get here, they've gotten here. So it has been kind of inconvenient for them but they've made it in and it'll be good," added Long.

A half a mile down the road sits the Swap Shop.

Crews are repairing the sidewalk next to the business.

Owner John Whitesell says he doesn't mind it.

"If you look around town the sidewalks are pretty bad, generally speaking," said Whitesell. "It's something that needs to be done. Better to do it now than 20 years from now when it gets worse."

Both Whitesell and Long have called Brazil home their entire lives.

They say dealing with the construction will be well worth it when it's all said and done.

"I'm a Brazil native and you always would like to see that," Whitesell said. "You don't want to see your hometown go into states of decline like some other communities will do if people neglect infrastructure and businesses."

"I'm glad that we're growing. I'm from here, born and raised and still do business here. I think it's great," Long said.

The initial plan for the U.S. 40 construction was to reach State Road 59 by the end of the year.

But due to delays associated with contaminated soil alongside U.S. 40 and Chicago Street, INDOT says the new goal is to reach Depot Street by 2015.
