You could soon be shopping at a new store on the east side of Terre Haute.

Meijer plans to open a store on U.S. 46 near Walmart.

A field could soon turn into a place for you to get all your shopping done. Greg Gibson owns the land. He also played a hand in the development of the strip mall just across the street. He sees a lot of potential in the east side of Terre Haute.

"I think it's the next place for Terre Haute to develop," said Gibson. "We are out of room down at the 41 - I-70 interchange. Indianapolis is growing this way as you can see in Plainfield and I think it's prudent that Terre Haute grow in that direction as well and I think it's the next place."

A boost to the economy is what Terre Haute residents say they're looking for. Not only would Meijer offer groceries and clothes, but also jobs.

"More jobs we can get in here and I for one don't care if they're Walmart jobs. I don't care if they're Meijer jobs," said Jerri Doty, a Terre Haute resident.

Development on this side of town is fairly new. East side residents remember driving to the other side of town to shop just a few years ago. Now, they're excited about having even more options.

"It's nice to have a lot of places over here versus having to drive all the way over to the west side and the south side," Aerial Kirchoff said.

"Way more comfortable. We are nine miles from the other Walmart and we are thrilled with anything they put out here," Doty said.

"I think that'll be good for competition prices and stuff. I kind of find myself going to Walmart all the time just because it's the closest place," said Josh Rychtarczyk.

Although they're thankful for options, some think there's just one more thing missing.

"How about a movie theater?" said Doty. "Get a movie theater out here too!"

The plan still has to be approved by Vigo County and the city of Terre Haute. We could know as soon as mid-November if they'll be breaking ground.
