Abdul-Qaadir Named Graduate Manager

The MVC Newcomer of the Year sticking around to help ISU.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir has been named the graduate manager for the ISU women’s basketball team for the 2014-15 season.

"We always wished Bilqis could have been on our roster another year, but having her as a part of our staff will be even more enjoyable,” Indiana State head coach Joey Wells said. “She voiced her aspirations of becoming a coach to us early on, and we're pleased that we could provide her with this opportunity."

Abdul-Qaadir, who is pursuing a master’s degree in coaching at Indiana State, has one year left of graduate studies to complete. The Memphis graduate came to Terre Haute last season for her final year of collegiate eligibility. She started all 32 games last season for the Sycamores, guiding them to a 20-12 record, their first MVC regular season title since 2005-06 and a WNIT postseason appearance.

She led the team in scoring (14.2 ppg.) and assists (140, 4.3 apg.) while going 40 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line. In addition to Newcomer of the Year honors, Abdul-Qaadir was named First Team All-Conference Second Team Scholar-Athlete and earned MVC Player, Newcomer or Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards a combined five times.

The Springfield, Mass. native scored in double-figures in 23 of 32 games last season, including six games with 20 points or more and scored at least two points in every game of the season.
