Consultants Hired to Examine Jail Conditions

Two consultant firms are examining Vigo county's justice system. A jail committee hired them after issues of overcrowding were brought to the forefront.
A Vigo County jail committee is working with outside consultants to study the county's system.

Two consultants will examine the current jail and how the county can best utilize the existing space.

They will also look at sites for a new jail.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom says the study is meant to accommodate the county's future needs.

"We need to build a facility that is large enough for our needs today and tomorrow and it doesn't have to be empty space. It could pay for itself over several years and as crime tends to increase or the need for beds increases over 20 to 30 years, the space will be available.

Vigo County's existing jail was built in 1982 with just 80 beds.
