Valley runners got a chance to lace up on a national course Sunday morning.

The Laverne Gibson Cross Country Course was home to the Nike Cross Midwest Regional Competition on Sunday.

But before the 1400 high school runners could take the stage, the community got a chance to run a 5K on the same course.

Organizers say it's a great way to say thanks to the community for being so supportive.

"It's a great opportunity for the local people to come out and check out what the court is all about. They get to run on a course that the NCAA championships are going to be run-on in the next week, and it's a great opportunity to see what's been going on here at cross-country town USA," said meet director Jeff Martin.

The high school runners who qualified in Sunday's meet will continue on to the national competition in Portland later this year.
