A coffee shop near Indiana State University's campus is hoping students and staff stop by on their way back to class this fall.
The coffee shop is inside the sanctuary of a former church. Next Step organizers who converted the space this past May say the success of the shop depends on folks stopping in for coffee, to study or just to socialize.
"Being accepted by the community is an integral part of their recovery, it's to say, 'I can do this, I'm part of society,' and to change the communities mindset, once they get to know them. I'll tell you they craw into your heart and they take up residence. I have a lot of daughters now,” says Dana Simons, the executive director for Next Step Foundation.
The Meeting Grounds is at Sixth Street and Washington Ave in Terre Haute. It relies solely on donations. Organizers say there are lots of outlets for students to plug lap tops in for studying. Children are also invited into the shop.
