ISU Softball Falls in Doubleheader vs Creighton

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.--Three different Sycamores combined to hit a total of four home runs as the Indiana State softball team (14-26, 3-11 MVC) fell in both games of a doubleheader to the Bluejays of Creighton (23-11, 9-2 MVC) Saturday at Price Field.
"Halle Humphrey threw great we were a dropped fly ball away from a split," head coach Shane Bouman said. "Shelby Wilson was really good offensively I love the way our girls competed today. Weather looks beautiful should be a great day for Sycamore softball tomorrow."
Game One:
The Sycamores struck first in the bottom of the first inning but could not rally behind freshman Halle Humphrey's complete game as the Sycamores fell by a final score of 3-1.
Junior Shelby Wilson gave the Sycamores an early lead as she hit a two out solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays battled back in the top of the third inning when Creighton sophomore Bri Lingl hit a bases loaded deep fly ball to center field that was misplayed by the Sycamore center fielder, allowing  three unearned runs to score, giving the Bluejays a 3-1 advantage.
The Sycamores threatened in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Ashley Dickerson hit a one out double to right center before a walk by freshman Kelsey Montgomery. Both runners advanced on a groundout by junior Morgan Allee before a groundout ended the inning.
The Sycamores could get no closer as they fell in game one by a final score of 3-1.
Humphrey pitched 7.0 complete innings allowing just six hits with no earned runs while striking out four. Wilson finished the game 22-2 with an RBI and run scored while Dickerson was 1-3 with a double.
Game Two:
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bluejays took an early lead and never looked back as they went on to sweep the Sycamores with a 16-5 win in game two.
The Bluejays wasted no time in taking a lead as they scored five runs off five hits in the top of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead after one half inning of play. They then added one more run with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second inning to make it 6-0.
Indiana State answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore Megan Stone hit homered to make cut the Bluejay advantage to 6-1. Two batters later, freshman Abbie Malchow walked and stole second base before scoring off an RBI single by Dickerson to make it 6-2.
Once again the Bluejays answered with a three-run home run to extend their lead to 9-2 over the Sycamores after 2.5 innings complete.
The Sycamores would not go down quietly as Wilson hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the third, this time in the form of a two-run shot to cut the Bluejay advantage to 9-4.
Creighton then responded with three runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 12-4 before senior Mackenzie Connelly hit her first home run of the season to make it 12-5. The Bluejays put the game away in the fifth inning, however, scoring four runs to go on to defeat the Sycamores by a final score of 16-5.
Wilson finished the game 1-2 at the plate with two RBI's and a run scored while Stone was 2-3 with an RBI and run scored.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game set to begin at 12 p.m. At Price Field.
