The Victory Bell rang in an Indiana State victory as the Sycamores defeated the Butler Bulldogs for the ninth straight time, posting a 2-1 victory Wednesday in a game played at Victory Field. Indiana State improved to 27-12 on the season and will return home for a big Missouri Valley Conference series this weekend as the Dallas Baptist Patriots come to Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium. Butler fell to 16-23 with the loss. Five pitchers saw work for Indiana State during the game with freshman Mike Hammel, who grew up just north of Indianapolis, getting his first start of his collegiate career. Hammel went 2.1 innings before A.J. McElderry took over in the third and went 2.2 innings. Nick Martin worked 1.1 innings, Austin Conway 0.2, and Josh Dove 2.0. McElderry (2-0) picked up the win with Dove recording his first save of the season. The Sycamore pitchers combined to allow one run on six hits while striking out five and walking one. The Sycamores struck pay dirt in the fifth after stranding six in the first four innings. Landon Curry led off the fifth by beating out a bunt for an infield single. He then stole second, his 16th stolen base of the season, and was advanced to third on a Cody Zimmerman sacrifice bunt. Curry scored as Jacob Hayes grounded out. Indiana State added one more in the sixth. Tyler Wampler walked with one out and stole second, his eighth stolen base of the season. It looked like he might be left stranded but Derek Hannahs came through with a two-out single through the right side with Wampler coming around to score. The Bulldogs broke in to the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth as Marcus Calderon singled up the middle, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on Chris Maranto's sacrifice fly to right. Indiana State would threaten again in the seventh but could not push across an insurance run and neither team could mount an attack the rest of the way. The Sycamores scored two runs on seven hits with Landon Curry, Jacob Hayes, and Derek Hannahs each hitting two singles. Cody Zimmerman also had a single in the game.
