Mecca, IN - We've all heard of the importance of smoke alarms and for most of us,the only time we think about them is when we change batteries. But in Parke County, the installation of smoke alarms saved a family.
The Evans family from Mecca feel very lucky thanks to Don and Jenny Gorrell, who are Red Cross volunteers. Last year, the Gorrell's installed free smoke alarms in the Evans home. When a fire broke out, last June, the alarms alerted the family and they escaped the blaze.
The Evans' family were able to return to their home after the fire.
The Indiana region of the Red Cross has installed more than 16,000 new smoke alarms and saved at least 10 lives since the campaign's Inception..including the grateful family from Parke County.
