Teachers at Vigo County Schools can no longer lead their students in prayer. The change comes after a complaint was filed by the Freedom of Religion Foundation. The complaint references a prayer at the school corporation's awards banquet last May. A Supreme Court ruling states school functions must remain neutral when it comes to religion.
"We have athletic events where you'll see athletes take a knee and they'll say the Lord's Prayer and that's often times lead by the coach. I'm sure there will still be prayer and the Lord's Prayer said, but that would have to be started by a student," said Superintendent Danny Tanoos.
There will be no other consequences related to the complaint.
