In 1818 the Darwin Ferry first started in business. The ferry was used to transport people and any other objects that had to cross the river. Over time bridges were built in Terre Haute and Hutsonville. Nearly 30 ferries that once floated along the river shut down due to the bridges. The Darwin Ferry stuck evenly between the two bridges continued to operate for local farmers that didn't want to drive forty plus miles to get to their land. Now nearly two centuries later the Darwin Ferry is still operated by two local farming families.
