"One of the reasons that we're very excited is because this new tool has really exposed how many excellent teachers we truly have in Vigo County," said Mick Newport, Vigo County School Corporation director of human resources.
While 99 percent of teachers in the corporation passed with flying colors, the schools they work in didn't fair as well. Earlier this year the Indiana Department of Education gave Sarah Scott Middle School an "F."
Local mom, Melissa Garner, used to send her son to Sarah Scott. He has special needs, and concern for his education prompted the family to move out of the county.
"They had big classrooms and they don't get a whole lot of support. They do what they can do with what they have," said Garner.
We asked Vigo County administrators about the discrepancy between high teacher evaluations and a failing school grade.
"Right now we are focusing on certain things at Sarah Scott that are trying to help get them where they need to be. The staff is very responsive to that. They have great students there," said Newport.
We also contacted the department of education about the discrepancy. They said they developed a system called RISE for teacher evaluations. Districts can modify that or choose their own criteria. Vigo County administrators chose to modify.
Teachers' raises will now be based on the evaluations.
