Four special deputies are the target of an investigation after last weekend's Scheid Diesel Extravaganza.

We know the Indiana State Police and the Vigo County Sheriff's Department are investigating.

At the center of the investigation are four private security guards who were deputized to help control traffic and issue citations at the fairgrounds during the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza.

There is nothing unusual about this practice.

In fact, Sheriff Greg Ewing tells me that it's been utilized for several years, and there's never been a problem.

However, this past weekend, the special deputies issued citations to motorists for multiple offenses, and then allegedly told the drivers they could immediately pay the fine in cash.

Sheriff Ewing says this cash payment is completely illegal and he's disappointed if the investigation confirms the allegations.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing said, "You know you're talking about integrity, and honesty an so for and it's just unacceptable behavior and of course once I learned of it of course their special deputies privileges were immediately revoked."

Because the guards were deputized by Vigo County, Indiana State Police are taking the lead in the investigation.

If anyone was approached inside the fairgrounds they are urged to contact Indiana State Police at the Putnamville Post.
