It also brings a show of force from law enforcement.
Upwards of 15-thousand people are expected to attend Scheid Diesel fest this weekend and multiple law enforcement agencies will be patroling areas surrounding the fairgrounds to ensure safety for both festival goers and the public.
ISP Sgt. Joe Watts said, "Last year was a little bit calmer of a year far as traffic citations and d arrests so we're hoping that trend will continue even to this year."
Thousands attend Scheid Diesel Extravaganza every year. The fairgrounds hire in a private agency to patrol the grounds.
Jennifer Cook said, "We feel very confident that they do a great job.. they will be there around the clock and we want our visitors to be able to enjoy themselves but we want them to be safe as well."
Four other law enforcement agencies will work together to make sure crowds don't get out of control. Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, Terre Haute Police Department and Vigo County Sheriff's Department will be patroling third street, with special focus paid to cracking down on drinking and driving.
Sgt. Watts said, "We're primarily focused on traffic and criminal safety... so the minor consumings, the minor transportation of alcohol. the alcohol related offenses that we come across are normally from traffic stops or auto crashes."
Fairground officials make sure crowds are acting in a safe manor inside their gates... but after diesel fest hours, that's when ISP and ISEP say they see the most issues on third street and the surrounding areas.
Sgt. Watts said 3rd street construction may make traffic twice as congested and potentially pose complications for law enforcement to get around. But ISEP's Patrick Fulford says he hopes people act responsibly and don't get behind the wheel if they've been drinking.
Capt. Fulford said, "Usually there's two things that get you in trouble... number one, you're breaking the law and number two you bring attention to yourself."
Police say they hope for a smooth weekend ahead, and Jennifer cook agrees.
Cook said, "We have worked very hard to make sure all of the visitors coming in to Terre Haute have a good experience on the fairgrounds property."
Friday and Saturday are the main nights for Scheid Diesel. Obviously avoid that area of third street this weekend if you're needing to get somewhere quickly.
