A new phone scam could be taking your money without ever even speaking with you.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department says multiple residents have reported a charge on their phone bills after simply returning a missed call.

Overseas numbers are calling cell phones once and then hanging up, and if the number is called back , you can be charged as much as $100.

Police ask everyone to not return a call if you do not recognize the area code.

If you think you've been contacted by the scammers contact law enforcement immediately:

"Local law enforcement has no jurisdiction you to reach out reach out and stop these kinds of things, so were going to have to stop it here locally, we're going to have to stop it with the citizens not returning those calls because unfortunately the individuals, the perpetrators in these cases are outside the reach of law enforcement," said Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom.

Police have confirmed that these area codes are connected to the new phone scam:

Antigua or Barbuda (268)
Dominican Republic (809)
Jamaica (876)
British Virgin Islands (284)
Grenada (473)

If you've received a missed call from any of these areas do not call the number back, and contact your local law enforcement.
