Boaters had a beautiful day to enjoy the open water. Conservation officers made sure everyone boated safely.

The Department of Natural Resources kicked off a new safe boating campaign. It promotes using life jackets.

The program is called "Wear it, Indiana." It targets recreational boaters and swimmers through a series of TV commercials and public appearances.

One officer says this program will save lives.

"Last year we had 42 water related drownings, 27 of those were boating or directly related to boating and we're trying to reduce that number,” said conservation officer Max Winchell.
