Thousands of people have descended on Terre Haute's Fairbanks Park. They are there to show support for community safety.

Tuesday was national night out, with events happening all over the Wabash Valley.

Terre Haute's National Night Out is one of the biggest around, it is the 31st annual event for the Terre Haute community.

Terre Haute Fire Chief, Jeff Fischer was one of many officials who jumped in the dunk tank.

Each dunk raised money for Terre Haute Catholic Charities.

The Terre Haute Fire Department was one of many agencies giving away free items and information.

Night Out allows for the community to meet officials outside of their uniforms, "I think the Mayor said it best in an interview, most of the time when people see us, they're having a bad day. Now they get to see us when we kind of let our hair down and go one on one, ask questions,  have a good time, get some free things and stuff for back to school, helmets, whatever. So this is always a great thing for the people of Terre Haute, and for us," said Fischer.
