Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is aiming for a new office in the Land of Lincoln.

He announced on his website Sunday that he will run for the Republican nomination for Illinois Governor.

The Pontiac native wrote: "Now is the time for leaders to act with conviction and courage... Illinois is indeed broke -- but our great state is not beyond repair."

The 58-year-old was elected Treasurer in 2010 after stints in the State House of Representative and Illinois Senate.

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn has said he plans to run for re-election next year, but could face challenges within his own party, as Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and former White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley are considering runs.
