Desperate for Donations

The Clay County Humane Society has some very serious electrical problems that it needs fixed. But the shelter just does not have the money for it right now.

It's been about a month since the new board of the Clay County Humane Society learned of the building's dangerous electrical system.

"We called in an electrician, a certified electrician, and he looked at it and said, 'it's like a hand grenade with the pin pulled and it's ready to go off.'" said Janice Clark, Vice President of the Shelter Board.

The problems started with a building addition. The electrical system was just sort of... pieced together.

And now shelter manager Sable Randolph says, "We're afraid to even turn on the heat this winter, for fear it's gonna burn the building down."

Unless the entire electrical system is replaced, from the road, to the shelter and through the whole building, turning on the heat could mean fires and fumes at the Humane Society.

"We need a lot of money, quickly. Winter's here. We won't have any heat," said Clark

Even though the shelter does host fundraisers, most of that money goes towards paying the bills. It's not enough to launch a new electrical system. And they need to get the process started soon.

"It won't get done over night if we start today. So the sooner, the better. We want to get this done before cold weather is here," she explained.

"We definitely need some help. We definitely need donations to bring in. And we definitely need to get this electric issue fixed because otherwise, we have no idea what we're facing here," added Randolph.

Not turning on the heat isn't an option for the shelter and the animals once the cold hits. But turning it on without fixing the system is danger to both the animals and workers. Anyone who would like to help is asked to call the Clay County Human Society for more information.

The number for the shelter is 812-446-5126.
