In Vigo County, State Road 641 has entered a new phase of road construction.

What seems to be a never ending construction zone is finally showing some improvement.

We all know that summer is construction season for INDOT.

This year, one of the most watched projects is the work on 641.

You can't drive on it yet, but you can clearly see where the new 641 lanes will take drivers around Terre Haute, by-passing a busy and congested US-41.

Debbie Calder, an INDOT spokesperson said, "It's going to give access to the business park on the south side, the Terre Haute airport here on the north side, so there's a lot of you know economic opportunity for this roadway also."

Right now, crews are focusing on the on and off ramps. They're working at both ends of the road, on the southern end, close to 41, and at the northern end, next to I-70,

"The first part of the bypass, like everyone knows in this area is already open. That stretches from US-41 to McDaniel Road, these last two sections, phase three and phase four are scheduled to be open to traffic by the end of the construction season in 2016," said Calder.

That completion date can't get here soon enough for drivers who want to avoid the crowded lanes of US-41.

Mark Overpeck, an Indiana State Trooper said, "Well we're hoping that it should alleviate a lot of the traffic on 41, which in turn should reduce the number of crashes that happen on 41, especially in rush hour time."

In addition to the work on 641, there are other projects going on in conjunction, including resurfacing and paving on the interstate. Plus, INDOT has started work on a local service road that will run parallel to State Road 46.

For all the construction, INDOT wants to remind drivers to be cautious when traveling thru the work zones.

"We definitely have a lot of work going on this year, so we just ask people to be aware and watch for that," said Calder.
