Ms. Golbeck described her experience in a recent Slate article.
She found out she averaged about ten activities a day. Liking someone's posting, adding a comment or a status update. She'd been doing so since 2005. That meant about 30-thousand items to delete.
She went into the activity log near the top of her timeline page and went item-by-item. 12 hours later, she looked for another option. She said she tried a number of automated solutions, and some didn't work as well as others. In the end, she said, a process called Absterge worked best for her, deleting everything -- it took about one hour.
Ms. Golbeck said she deleted everything, which was the easiest option. She said deleting by hand would have taken her at least 60 hours!
Now, she feels freer to comment since she has a system in place to purge her activity every month. She hopes that way, her posts never look stale or can be taken out of context.
